you need this: lettuce grow
If y’all have been following me for a long time, you’ll be sure to remember way back when I used to have an extensive garden. We are talking boxes, built in sprinklers… and this was years before everyone got on the gardening trend during covid.
I’ve always loved growing my own produce - both for the organic, non-gmo aspects, and also because my grandparents did it and to me, there is nothing that tastes as good as home grown produce. Nothing. The smell of homegrown tomatoes is the smell of my childhood.
And then we got josie, and the area in our new house that I had designated for my home garden was suddenly an equally attractive restroom site— and yes we’re all about natural and organic over here… but that’s a little much, even for me.
But finally. Finally! I found the perfect solution. Lettuce grow. It’s a vertical homestead that can grow inside or outside. It houses it’s own hydroponic system - versus extensive dirt. It litereally waters itself via a sprinkler system that is programable depending on the climate, season, and time of day. I’m telling you… this thing is brilliant, and I have been obsessively watching it for years, to make sure that it would work for what I want.
And boy, does it.
All the guesswork is taken out of play, for those of you who aren’t as garden savy. You literally put in your location, and if you are growing indoors or outdoors, and the website (www.lettucegrow.com) will tell you what selection is availible for you for optimal growth.
You can pick your size, depending on how many people you are feeding in your family. Obviously, as there are six of us, we needed the largest size, and I chose to have at least two of every variety of produce. Which came down to 18. 18! Different possible produce options.
I have beans, romesco cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, frisee (my most favoreite salad green), arugula, different types of romaine, bok choy, butter lettuce, baby lettuce, thyme, basil, fennel, onions… the list goes on and on. It’s the best.
After years of growing, I’ve learned that if you pick lettuce by leaf, versus by the entire head, it will keep grown. But if you aren’t like me… your seedlings come with “pick by” dates. So you know when your produce will be at its best. You also get feeding reminders; change water reminders; and seasonal produce change reminders. All through the year, you can change out and replace each seedling as they are used.
I can’t even tell you what a game changer this is. Or how much I adore feeling like I want a salad and being able to go outside to pick the freshest lettuce I’ve ever had. Cooking a steak? Run outside and grab some thyme. Homemade sausage? I’ve got fennel and green onions. Miso soup? All the bok choy I could possible want.
And this is winter! I can’t wait until spring for all the veggies and fruit. I’m just worried I might have to get another one to make sure I can get all the varieties I need.
Check it out, and then let me know what veggies you’re growing, so I can send you some recipe inspo.
