out and about: batch 22 at california adventure

One of the fun things offered up at disney’s california food and wine festival are the demonstrations. From on property chef’s sharing their favorite dishes, to wine and drinks highligted around the park.

We were lucky enough to be there on the day that batch 22 was holding a cocktail making class. Batch 22, is an aquivit, or spirit that has a whole flavor profile of its own, and can easily be swapped out for gin or vodka in your favorite drinks… while imparting its own distinct flavors of carroway and dill. Also, one of the owners happens to be based in san diego, so there’s that. We love a hometown connection. Plus my friend liz has worked with them many times before and was excited to see them create this cocktail on the road.

We were given all the tools and instructions to follow along and create the batch 22 verson of the bees knees. The hunny bunny, if you will. Typically a gin drink, with honey simple, and lemon - that’s right up my alley. In fact, if you add in some champs, you’ve got a fantastic french 75. And you know how I feel about the french 75.

The batch 22 version is as follows.

Ingredients:

2 oz batch 22 classic gold

3/4 oz lemon juice

1/2 oz honey simple

lemon twist garnish

Directions:

Add aquavit, juice, and simple to a shaker. Shake until cold. Strain into coupe. Add lemon twist.

While the hunny buuny was delicious, and right up my alley… it did get me thinking about all the other versions of cocktails I could make. There was a pickle whiskey sour featured during the food and wine festival that I think I could turn into an aquavit cocktail… especially with the notes of dill. And don’t get me started on a cucumber/dill gimlet. The ideas are flowing. Stay tuned.
