quick tip: make your own poke bowl bar
One of our favorite family meals is making your own poke bowl. It’s easy, and highly customizable. Which, when you have a family of six, is always a good thing. Everyone can pick what they want, so everyone’s happy.
This is why I love make your own bars in any iteration.
The key to the poke bowl is rice. And I always make my sushi rice. It really is the staple of the bowl.
Different protein poke toppings I make are ahi poke, salmon poke, hawaiian poke, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, marinated tofu, plain tofu. Definitely not all at once, but I usually do at least three different options.
For veggies, I typically offer shredded carrots, chopped cucumbers, chopped avocado, edamame, wakame (seaweed salad), cilantro, scallions, jalapeños, and serranos.
For extras, it’s ponzu, eel sauce, soy sauce, coconut aminos, kewpie, and sriracha, and sesame seeds.
The brilliant thing, is that you can do however much or little for the bar that you want. If everyone in your family only loves hawaiian style poke, then just make that. If nobody likes avocado (the blasphemy) then don’t chop up avocado. You want to add tomato? Not my thing, but you do you. And that’s what makes this such a perfect weeknight meal.
