out and about: birdseye la jolla
Y’all know how much we love a local hotspot.
And since birdseye has come into la jolla, we’ve been excited to have another fun spot to hit up for dinner out.
Great views, with a family friendly menu to boot. What more can you ask for?
Well you know jamie was happy, sculpin being in his top 3 ipa rotation. And any place that carries one of them is always an easy sell for a dinner out. So it’s a win for me too.
Love the use of guava in all their drinks. It’s one of my favorite flavors, but not easily found. But so fresh, and reminds me of growing up in san diego.
You all know how I feel about bread service. Gotta have it. I won’t get all waxy poetic about it… just love to eat it.
We got ours with olive oil, and were thrilled to discover the olive oil also came with balsamic. That’s one of our favorite combos at naples in downtown disney… but the bread there is nowhere as good as this focaccia. Definitely add it to your list.
Love, love love a margarita flight, or any flight for that matter. Birdseye has 3 different flights availible. The margarita, the mojito, and the mezcalita. Doesn’t get anymore fun that that.
And what was even better? They had no issue substituting the pineapple (hello allergy) with any of their other margarita flavors. I went with the spicy jalapeño. Perfection. Just the right amount of spice.
The lime was a classic margarita. I found the dragon fruit to be a little sweet for my taste, but good none the less. And you already heard what I think about guava. Tastes like home.
Not gonna lie. One of the best ceviche’s we’ve had. And for whatever reason? We’ve been on a ceviche kick lately. This one was one of my favs.
The shrimp was perfect. Not mushy, or fishy. Perfectly “cooked” and marinated without being over powered by the other ingredients.
We were very intrigued with the idea of a bbq chicken pizza that also had marinara sauce on it. Like seriously?
Let me tell you… it was a great pairing. Who would have thought?
And considering I love dipping any kind of pizza in ranch, having it all over the pizza to begin with was genius.
Only complaint was I wish the champs was a little more chilled. Or a lot more chilled.
Flavor profile was a classic brut.
So glad we we tried this sandwich. To be honest, jamie isn’t a huge fan of rib eye - because he finds it a little too fatty (um, kinda the best part). And while birdseye has it in mains form; jamie agreed to try it as a handheld.
This was the most tender ribeye… there were no huge chunks of fat, yet it still melted in your mouth without excessive chewing necessary. The aioli was great, the tomatoes and lettuce crisp, and the fries the perfect blend of cripsy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Pro tip: get the parmesan fries.
Another day, another salmon dish.
The salmon was tender and well cooked. The broccolini was cooked, yet crisp. The mango pico added the perfect bright and sweet element.
Great combination.
So lucky to have another great spot in our neighborhood - the only problem is that there were so many dishes that sounded delish, that we literally had to debate what to order. Which, I guess is not so much a problem, but now a decision as to how soon we can go back to try the rest.
