out and about: barbarella spring '24 happy hour

How gorgeous is this surfboard? Stunningly handpainted yes… but it also lets you know exactly what you can expect.

Love, love, love a happy hour. Especially when that happy hour is five minutes away, reasonably priced, and the food is fantastic…

I’ve been to barbarella a bunch before for dinner. It was a regular haunt for our twin playgroup mom’s nights’ out. And the food has always been on point.

So it was really fun to learn about their local happy hour… which has some of the most reasonable prices in town. And, just so you know, that doesn’t mean small portions. We walked away not only full, but having to bring leftovers home.

There is seriously nothing better than finding a great happy hour close to home. Makes it so easy to sneak out and have a mini date night.

happy hour margarita

alpine duet

Love that there was a happy hour margarita. Pro tip? Make it spicy.

This one was great - not overly sweet, and a perfect amount of heat on the backend. Just how I like my margs.

And while beers aren’t on the happy hour menu, you can order them at regular prices. And you know jamie… if one of his top is on the menu, nothing is stopping him from ordering it. Alpine duet is one of those.

queso al forno: baked creamy leek, blue cheese and pancetta, topped with mozzarella cheese and served with house-made corn chips.

Y’all know me. If there is a queso on the menu, best believe, i'm ordering it. Give me all the cheese, all the time. Love that the blue cheese wasn’t super bluey; it just gave enough umami to carry through with the heavy flavor bomb.

And can we take a moment to talk about the pancetta? Game changer. Who wants chorizo when you can have smokey pork goodness? Not me.

bartender’s special: raspberry martini

The martini came with vodka, but I switched it to gin, ‘cause allergy.

Loved the pretty color, and that it wasn’t overly sweet.

I also love the fact that there is a happy hour drink that will constantly change… love options, especially when it’s at a close and local spot we go to all the time.

salmon tartare tostadas: avocado sauce, marinated salmon, pico de gallo and endives

I read the description before ordering, but I still had to wrap my brain around salmon tartare on a tostada… the flavor combo of raw salmon and capers aith pico de gallo threw me off. I kinda wish the salmon had been tossed in the pico, v/s topped with it… and this is giving me ideas for summer… but beggars, choosers.

Really fun and different twist. And you get three giant toastadas. Giant. Not gonna lie though, jamie devoured two of them.

cauliflower tempura: served with celery, house-made spicy aioli and marinara sauce

You know how much I love cauliflower, so it was a no brainer that we were ordering this one.

So perfectly crispy. The texture was excellent. No soggyness whatsoever, and the cauliflower was perfectly cooked - no mushy vegetable here.

The hardest part was just deciding which sauce to dip them in… spoiler alert. Both were excellent.

sangria: red or white

If you’ve been around this website for a while; or know me in real life… you know I am always down for a sangria situation. In fact it’s a staple of any entertaining we are doing. Always need a good sangria.

I went for the white. Obviously.

What interested me was this sangria was more juice forward than the ones I tend to make, or have tried before. Allmost as if a mimosa and sangria had a baby… but without the sparkle.

Got to say I really enjoyed it. Not only will I definitely order it on my next trip, but I will also be working out my own juice forward version. Perhaps for this year’s 4th of july?

pizza of the hour: rotating pizza special, ask server for details.

Like I said before… i love a changing menu. Especially when it’s in our ‘hood and we go alot. So just knowing that the pizza will be different every time we go… #lifechanging.

First… let me just say, I’m really not gonna care about the toppings, because the pizza crust is hands down, the best I’ve ever had…. like imagine me eating all the crust (which I never do), good. You guys! It was so good.

This particular itiration had a poblano sauce, corn (hello?!? corn for the win), cilantro, red onion, crema, sausage and lots of melty cheese (mozarella?). Seriously the perfect cobo. Torn between loving a rotating pizza and wanting to have this variation over and over and over again.

Perfect bite? Check please.

All in all, I’m so happy that barbarella has a whole new happy hour. This is how we love to eat (sharing is caring), and any option that’s five minutes away, tastes great, and is reasonable… is a win for us.
