out and about: nye with himitsu

Our new years eve was less than stellar. We were only 2 weeks out from the great flood of 2023, and in a tenuous airbnb that we had no idea if we would be able to stay at, or would be moving momentarily. WE had no idea what the situation with our house was, or how long we would be displaced (spoiler alert, prolly another 4 months).

So we wanted a little bit of home, a little bit of stability for the kiddos.

Clearly we needed a sushi night.

And where else do we go for a sushi night, if I’m not at home in my own kitchen with my own supplies?

Himitsu.

The gold standard, and the first restaurant every single one of the kids request if given a choice.

We ordered most of our favorites, and it was seriously the most comfort food we could have given the time and place.

Our order:

Miso soup: tofu, seaweed, scallions

Vegetable tempura

Tostadas: choice of hamachi, tuna, salmon, or albacore. Served on corn tostada with cilantro aioli, avocado, radish, red jalapeno, serrano, lime zest, maldon salt.
We went with just blue fin tuna this time.

Hamachi/salmon jalepeno: hamachi or salmon, sliced jalapeno, chili pepper threads, ponzu

We did half and half.

Snow crab tempura: snow crab, black truffle salt

Spice and spicy roll: spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, avocado, spicy aioli, chopped serrano

Matsu roll: spicy tuna, avocado, topped with salmon, serrano peppers, ponzu (full disclosure, this is the kiddos most favorite roll of all time)

Avocado sumaki cut rolls

Cucumber sumaki cut rolls

Spicy tuna sumaki cut rolls

Spicy salmon sumaki cut rolls

Shrimp tempura sumaki cut rolls

All the kids eat all the things. And all the kids always pick sushi for their out and about dinner/lunch choice.

This was seriously the best choice for some normality on a holiday that was filled with unnormal activity.
